Treat Your Dog's Minor Illnesses at Home

Over five years ago, my dad and I went to the shelter to adopt a dog that I had come across on petfinder.org.

He was a cockapoo named biscuit, 8 years old young, and his family had separated and dropped him off there.

Upon meeting him, I knew that Mr. Biscuit was the perfect dog for our family and I had only heard great things about cockapoos.

When we got him home, we noticed that he completely refused pet food. Since we had very little information about him, we began to feed him a diet of things like lean ground beef, baked chicken, fish and vegetables.

After about a month we noticed that he had the worst allergies ever. He was always itchy, had infected ears and crusty skin.

A friend had told me about pet insurance for Biscuit but I looked into it and he was simply too old to be covered.

He currently sees the vet about every three months but in the meantime I am able to help him at home using home remedies and OTC products that I have discovered.

Here are some of my favorites:

DIY Ear Cleaner for Dogs

This is great for preventing ear infections but if your dog already has an infection, it is best to take him to the vet.

Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and isopropyl alcohol in a bowl and pour into a clean bottle for dispensing drops. An empty contact lens solution container is perfect.

Apply the solution to a cotton ball and gently clean the outside of your dog's ear and place two drops of the solution into each ear.

This solution will help to remove wax and debris from the ears and keep them clean and dry which prevents infections.

OTC Pain Relief for Dogs

While dogs CANNOT take tylenol, advil, aleve, etc. They can safely take aspirin for pain relief.

This is good to use if it is going to take a day or two to get your dog an appointment with the vet and they have an ear infection or minor arthritis.

The dose is typically 5mg of buffered aspirin per pound every 12 hours, but of course, be sure to check with your vet first. I like to give it with food since aspirin is known to be a bit hard on the stomach. Amazon and many pet stores sell chewable aspirin for dogs.

DIY Pill Pockets

Many dogs refuse to take medications unless they are hidden in food. Instead of going out and buying pill pockets, you can make your own.

Simply mix 1 tablespoon of milk, 1 tablespoon of peanut butter and 2 tablespoons of flour and form it around your dog's medication.

DIY Flea Repellant

Simpy mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle and liberally spray your dog's coat.

Fleas hate the smell and taste of vinegar so it will keep them far away. I usually do a vinegar rinse at the end of my dog's bath since he hates spray bottles.

Easy Dry/Flaky Skin Treatment

If your dog gets dry/flaky skin, try pouring on tablespoon of olive oil on his food 3-4 times a week.

After a month or so you are likely to notice a difference!

Prevent Dehydration

If your dog is not feeling well and cannot keep food down, it is important to prevent dehydration.

Offer small amounts of low sodium chicken brother to your dog or even coconut water if he is willing to drink it.

Be sure to check with your vet before trying any of these remedies and be sure to always keep a basic pet first aid kit on hand so you can enjoy your four legged friend for many years to come!

Get Free Stuff Just by Downloading Apps

It seems like most companies have an App that offers customers an interactive experience whether it is a retail company or a restaurant.

They really, really want you to download their app.

Why? Because you will see it every time you use your phone and that is of course great for their bottom line.

Fortunately for us consumers, many companies give us an incentive to use up precious space on our phones.

Though I doubt this list includes every freebie out there, here are some of the ones that I found:

Snapfish offers customers who download their app 100 free prints per month. If you take a lot of photographs this is a great app to have.

CVS gives customers $3 in Extra Care Bucks when they download the Extracare on the Go App and add their card information. You can always sign up for a card if you need to.

Taco Bell has different promos going on in their app all the time. It is often a free taco when you use their app to order. Right now it is $2 off of a $10 purchase.

Chili's will give you enough points for chips and salsa, chips and queso, a kids meal or a dessert when you download their app and sign up for their rewards program.

Mcdonald's offers a free sandwich coupon along with many other coupons when you download their app.

Auntie Anne's sends you a coupon for a free pretzel within 24 hours after you download their app.

TGI Fridays gives customers a jump the line pass and a free appetizer or dessert when they download their app and sign up for their rewards program.

Burger King offers a buy one get one free Whopper coupon when you download their app.

Panera Bread will give you a free dessert item when you download their app and sign up for their rewards program.

7/11 offers a coupon for a free cup of coffee after you download their app.

Victoria's Secret PINK Nation App offers a freebie to anyone who downloads their app. The freebie has varied in the past from an iPhone case to a beanie.

If you are a college student, you probably know that there are a few places that give discounts when you show your student ID. After doing some research, I was shocked to see just how many places take part in discounts for students.

Here are some discounts that will help you squeeze a little more out of your work-study wages.

1.) My absolute favorite discount for students is the Amazon Student Prime Account.

Amazon offers students with a valid .edu email address some pretty cool perks.

The Best Generic Product Recommendations

I am always willing to try generic products if I cannot find a deal on a particular brand name item.

Not only are generic products less expensive, they are often manufactured in the same place as their brand name counterparts.

These are some of my absolute favorite generic products:

Medications

Whether prescription or over the counter, always buy generic medications. They have the same active ingredients and are simply just different in appearance.

This may seem obvious but I've noticed more people at CVS grabbing brand name OTC meds than generic.

Sams Club and Costco are my favorite places to buy OTC medications and supplements that I use on a regular basis.

I take allergy medication a few days a week. I prefer Claritin which is simply the brand name of the antihistamine Loratadine.

For just $13.46, I can get 400 doses of Loratadine. The brand name counterpart is $34.98 for 90 doses. That is a pretty significant savings!

Be sure to compare the difference the next time you go shopping.

Cleaning Products

I have tried so many different cleaning products in both generic and brand name and have developed my list of must haves.

Magic erasers are my absolute favorite cleaning item. The "magic" in them is that they are basically just extremely fine grit sandpaper. Thus why they can also ruin some surfaces!

My local Walmart sells a 2 count package of the brand name erasing sponges for $2.68.

The generic magic erasing sponges are just $1 for a 2 ct package at the dollar tree.

If you prefer to buy in bulk, Amazon sells 100 eraser sponges for just under $25!

I also purchase generic disinfecting wipes, window cleaner, furniture polish, floor cleaning cloths, dish soap and bleach at the Dollar tree.

Spices, Seasonings and Staples

This includes spices such as cinnamon, paprika, garlic powder and other common spices. There is just no difference between buying generic and brand name.

I recommend Aldi, the Dollar Tree and Big Lots for these items.

Cosmetics

I own a fair share of both generic and upscale brands of cosmetics and many of my favorite are generic brands!

Here are some must haves:

Wet n Wild Balm Stains are a combination of a balm and lip stain so they are not drying and are long lasting. They are my absolutely favorite and ring in under $3!

Maybelline Great Big Lash Mascara is my go to mascara and it is priced under $4!

e.l.f. Matte Lip Colors are another favorite of mine because they are available in many subtle colors for every day wear and are long lasting. They are priced at $3.

e.l.f. Makeup Setting Mist helps my makeup to last all day especially during hot weather. It is just $3.

Maybelline the Blushed Nude Shadows is my favorite eye shadow palette of all time and contains 12 shadows for under $10!

I do not recommend buying these generic items:

Paper towels. I have yet to find a generic brand that I like.

Garbage bags. I have not found any of these I like either and I am not a happy camper when a garbage bag breaks!

Condiments. I have tried generic ketchup and steak sauce to name a few and they just do not measure up.

Electronics. I have never had a good experience with any generic electronics. I find it is better to just spend a bit more for the brand name that has the best reviews.

These are just a few of my suggestions. Do you have any generic products that you love or absolutely hate? Let me know in the comments below!
